BORKNAGAR Mainman Talks Label Switch, Upcoming Album
February 5, 2008BORKNAGAR guitar player/main composer Øystein G. Brun recently spoke to Antenna about the group's label switch from Century Media to Indie Recordings, the band's upcoming album, and the status of his CRONIAN project. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Antenna: Following what seems like ages at Century Media Records, BORKNAGAR have switched to a fresh signing with Indie Recordings. Why was the time right for changes? And what do you expect from Indie Recordings?
Brun: Different reasons for the change of the label. We have worked with Century Media since 1996 and mostly the years have been good for both parties. But after 12 years, we became kind of bored and just had to climb another mountain so to speak. Century Media was never a bad option but in the end of the day, Indie Recordings just came up with an overall deal/cooperation that we could not resist. They have been friends and fans of the band for many years and their credibility in the Norwegian music industry is very solid. Indie Recordings are a relatively new label, but I am sure they will grow to become an important enterprise very soon. Interesting to be a part of something that is new and fresh.
Antenna: BORKNAGAR have experimented widely with every release, with an acoustic album, "Origin", perhaps being the peak of such extravaganza. What can we expect from an upcoming album?
Brun: The next album will be ear-candy for our long-run fans, I hope. Of course, there will be an element of evolution but this time around we'll head towards our musical roots. Hard to describe how it will sound in the end of the day but it will be 100% BORKNAGAR all the way. And this time we'll be back on the metal-vagon!
Antenna: Your lineup has been fluctuating, regarding the bass and drummer situation, yet with much stability regarding your vocalist Vintersorg and keyboarder Lazare. Who are involved in the new album?
Brun: Well yeah, there have been some line-up changes throughout the years, but the last 7 - 8 years the core of the band has been quite firm I would say. Asgeir [Mickelson], Lazare, Vintersorg and I have been the spine of the band since 2000 or so, and that constellation is here to stay — I hope [laughing].
